Advanced anaesthesia for surgical or prolonged procedures

This unit provides information on the use of anaesthetics for surgical procedures. It also includes information on the use of anaesthetics to provide humane restraint during other, non-painful, procedures, such as imaging. After completion of this module, learners should have an understanding of factors influencing the selection and application of anaesthesia for these procedures.

Online only – 24-26th November 2025. Pre-course materials will release two weeks in advance.

We highly recommend completion of the level 5 unit Anaesthesia for minor procedures before attending this unit.

You will cover

  • Anaesthesia for both surgical and non-surgical procedures
  • Balanced anaesthesia
  • Post anaesthetic recovery

Key Skills you will develop

  • An understanding of why anaesthesia is required for both surgical and non-surgical procedures
  • Ability to describe how different drug classes interact to produce the three components of the anaesthetic triad to different degrees, and how balanced anaesthesia might be best achieved by using combinations
  • Ability to describe methods to optimise post anaesthetic recovery to ensure a smooth and rapid recovery from anaesthesia

The event is finished.

Occasionally it is necessary for courses to be cancelled or rescheduled by CLAST. The Course Administrator will send an email to advise you of the cancellation and, if possible, provide a new date for the course. We will endeavour to give at least 4 weeks’ notice prior to the course start date.
